THE PROCESS MAKING A FUSED GLASS SCULPTURE

Each piece of glass in Jan's sculptures is a one-of-a-kind, unique piece of original art.  Basic shapes are cut from large pieces of glass, then either strips of glass or frit, crumbled glass, is layered on top of the basic shape.

These pieces are then fired to a full fuse in her kiln.  Each piece is inspected and then fired again with kiln fiber under each piece to give it curvature and undulations as if that piece were being moved by water.  These pieces are then edged with copper foil and tinned with solder to give the edges the silver tone.  A base is built of copper wire and individual pieces of glass are soldered together where edges touch.  The highly reflective glass is dichroic glass.  Every piece of glass used in Jan's sculptures is unique...each is hand-made and painstakingly detailed to get the desired effect of an underwater scene.
